The ‘Marzocco’ room of our b&b in Florence is located on the 2nd floor of the historic building, in our new flat renovated in 2015. The room has comfortable beds with memory foam mattresses and is furnished with a modern taste that makes it elegant.
The window overlooks the b&b’s terrace overlooking the palace’s main courtyard.
The ‘Marzocco’ was the lion symbol of popular power during the Middle Ages. The statue was commissioned to Donatello by the Florentine Republic in the early 1400s in honour of Pope Martin V on a visit to Florence. It was intended to decorate the papal flats in Santa Maria Novella, later moved to Piazza della Signoria and today the original is preserved in the Bargello Museum in Florence while a faithful copy remains in the piazza.
The ‘Chimera’ room of our b&b in Florence is located on the 2nd floor of the historic building, in our new flat renovated in 2015. The room has modern furnishings and can be either a double or two single beds with memory foam mattresses.
The window overlooks one of the inner courtyards of the b&b building.
The ‘Chimera’ is a fire-breathing monster from Greek mythology also described in the Iliad:
“…He was the monster of divine origin, lion’s head, goat’s breast, and dragon’s tail; and from his mouth he spewed horrendous flames of fire: and nevertheless, with the favour of the gods, the hero put it out… “(Iliad, VI, 180-184, transl. V. Monti)
A group of fifth-century Etruscan craftsmen in the Arezzo area reproduced the Chimera in a bronze statue and buried it to preserve its state, which was later found in 1553 during the construction of Medici fortifications.
The Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de’ Medici claimed it for his collection and displayed it for a time publicly in the Leone X room in Palazzo Vecchio. It was later moved to the Grand Duke’s studiolo in Palazzo Pitti, as reported in Benvenuto Cellini’s biography.
In the 18th century, thanks to the tail found by Giorgio Vasari, it was restored to its original form.
In 1718 it was transported to the Uffizi Gallery and later moved to the Palazzo della Crocetta, now the Archaeological Museum of Florence.
The ‘Pegaso’ room of our b&b in the centre of Florence is located on the 2nd floor, in our new flat renovated in 2015. The bed and breakfast room has a view of a typical Florentine courtyard, away from the city traffic.
The ‘Pegasus’ is a Greek mythological figure representing the most famous of winged horses. According to one of the many versions, the Pegasus was born from the ground wet with Medusa’s blood when Perseus cut off her head. The representation of this scene can be found in Benvenuto Cellini’s statue in Piazza della Signoria under the Loggia dei Lanzi.
Benvenuto Cellini, a Florentine artist and goldsmith, produced a coin with a depiction of Pegasus in honour of Cardinal Pietro Bembo in 1537, which is now in the Bargello National Museum.
Today the Pegasus is the symbol of the Region of Tuscany and the subject of the regional flag.
The Suite room consists of two communicating rooms, the ‘Glicine’ room and the ‘Lira’ room, and two bathrooms, one inside and one just outside the room for exclusive private use. The Suite can comfortably accommodate four people and offers a double bed, a single bed and a single armchair bed.
Our Suite was born from the internal communication between two of the most beautiful rooms in Casa Rovai: the Glicine room, which takes its name from the soft wisteria-coloured ceiling, and the Lira room with its marvellous neoclassical fresco depicting the instrument ‘the Lira’ in the centre. Decorations and antique furniture make this large family room one of the most charming in the house.
The ‘Studiolo’ is our room, with a French memory foam bed and wrought-iron frame, on the 1st floor and is part of one of the old rooms in the house. It has a working 20th century carved wooden washbasin in the room. The private bathroom (exclusive use, not shared with other guests) is located outside the room. The room overlooks the small courtyard of the building, away from the city traffic.
Grandfather’s old ‘studio’ is now the Studiolo, a beautiful room at the Casa Rovai Firenze bed and breakfast in the historic centre with a delicate decorated ceiling and a view of the inner courtyard of the house.
Our single room ‘La Lira’ with 20th century furnishings is located on the 1st floor of the building in the historic centre of Florence. The spacious room overlooks an inner Florentine courtyard, far from the traffic. The room can communicate with the previous room “Glicine” becoming a Suite. The bathroom is private (for exclusive use, not shared with other guests, located at the end of the corridor near the lobby) and is located outside the room.
This beautiful single room takes its name from the neoclassical decoration discovered on the ceiling. The lyre, the ancient musical instrument stands out among the turquoise, darts and triumphs of seasonal fruit with the beautiful 20th century chandelier in the centre.
According to Greek mythology, the lyre was invented by the god Hermes who gave it to the god Apollo who in turn gave it to his son Orpheus.
In classical times, the lyre was the symbol of the Apollonian virtues of moderation and balance.
This ancient musical instrument is still played in parts of north-east Africa
The room “Il Glicine” is one of the antique rooms of the house located on the 1st floor of our bed and breakfast in the historical centre of Florence. Tastefully and elegantly furnished with original 20th century furniture, this family room can communicate with the next room “La lira” thus becoming a Suite with two bathrooms.
This beautiful, spacious room takes its name from the beautifully decorated wisteria-coloured ceiling delicate to match the yellow colours of the room’s 20th century-style furniture.
The double room ‘La passione’ is located on the 1st floor of the b&b in the historic centre of Florence and is part of one of the oldest frescoed rooms in the house. It is a beautiful room with a warm and cosy atmosphere and a view of the largest inner courtyard of our Florentine quarter.
The room ‘the Passione‘ is named after a cycle of frescoes from the late 1500s depicting the Via Crucis found on two walls of the room in 2003 after the restoration of the house.
The ‘il Giglio’ room is the second room on the 1st floor of the antique Florentine palace. The beds are made of memory foam, to guarantee a good night’s sleep and correct posture during the night. The family room is large and also has a sofa bed. The room boasts a beautiful 16th century fresco depicting the Florentine lily, the city’s emblem, in the centre.
“I Putti” is a beautiful and spacious room located on the 1st floor of Casa Rovai b&b in the centre of Florence, and is the largest in the house with a charming frescoed ceiling dating back to neoclassicism. The room has a large bed with memory foam mattresses and a leather sofa bed.
The largest room in the house is named after two putti gently embracing each other hovering in the centre of the late 18th century fresco on the ceiling.
Putti are figures of small children with wings that were often used in allegorical and decorative depictions in antiquity.
The childish representation of the god Eros is known by the figure of a putto later called cupid. Examples are found in depictions of Greek sculptures and reliefs or in paintings from Pompeii.
